This podcast was an interesting experience for me, considering the fact that we were in a text chat with each other the moment you published the podcast episode.

There were some things which you said in that text chat that were not stated in the podcast; which help to drive your point home.

The similarities between the Clinton Administration and the Obama Administration are striking.

Both were preceded by a Bush, both were preceded by war in Iraq. There was a swelling of anti-government sentiment in the early days of the Clinton Administration just as there is today. There was Waco, Oklahoma City, which is parallel to the anti-government sentiment of today, not to mention the attacks on government buildings. (I.E. A Plane flying into an IRS building, etc)

In 93, Clinton passed his budget with 0 Republican votes. The same could be said about Obama's budget and the stimulus.

Then in 94, Health care reform was attempted.

The similarities are astounding, and I understand your points about why the Democrats are afraid of losing power.

However, there are some things that I disagree with, in your argument.

First of all, there was no Tea Party during the Clinton Administration. I'm not referring to angry right wingers, either. The difference is that the "Tea Party" is running 3rd party candidates in primary elections.

Now some people might say that their 3rd party candidates are splitting the Republican vote. Other people might say that the Tea Party was successful in forcing the GOP to the right.

I say that the activities of the Tea Party, regardless of the end result, is tipping the scales of our political landscape.

In your argument, you state that Dennis Kucinich could never win a general election for the presidency due to the fact that the political middle of this country views Dennis as a wacko; even though you think he would be a better President than Obama.

However... What is the right wing doing but alienating the middle of this country?

I believe there are several different types of "Independant Voter" within the USA.

I myself have toyed around with the idea of registering as an independent voter. That simple fact does not dictate that my beliefs and ideologies will change; it simply means that the two major political parties are not behaving in a way that represents my beliefs or wishes. Further more... Staying home on any given election day is simply not an option. I would never choose to not vote, though I think you are right when you talk about Democrats staying home for 12 years after 94.

If I were to register as an Independent, I would be at the extreme left of that political group of citizens. Conversely, there exists an extreme right end of the independents. These are the tea baggers, whom will always vote Republican over Democrat; but these are the guys running the third party candidates. Big difference.

Then there's the independent middle. Idiots whom look at Obama and McCain and can't decide who is better

Well the first thing I want to say is I think you missed my point when I stated that we need to push the party leftward. I'm not mad as hell nor am I a tea party mirror image for the left. Having conservatives in office for another term will not destroy America, the situation will become very dire but I think the situation has to become dire to wake people up. This year Democrats had a real chance to show what a supposedly liberal government would look like. In my eyes if feels like they have wasted it. Now when reich-wingers gain any seats this upcoming year and we actually do have to compromise and work with them its going to be tough to tackle any main points on a progressive agenda. Your revisionist history lesson on what happened in the Clinton years is also a little awkward. Its not that Clinton didn't do exactly what we wanted him to do so we avoided the polls and thus ruined the election. I feel Mr Clinton demolished himself with several moves that did not mix with his base. The current congress and senate may be scared of the lessons learned in the Clinton years but apparently they somehow missed the real reason they lost. I seriously doubt that democrats believe they lost because people felt they did too much or they did what we told them to. There is too much literature out there the proves they lost because they tried to cater to conservatives and corporate interests. Its the same thing with this healthcare law. I didn't expect a perfect bill but there are things that just do not need to be in there. Monopolies on prescription drugs, ban on drug importation, and not allowing medicare to directly bargain drug prices. Why are these in the bill? What purposes do they serve? Examine the excise tax and how it works. It bends the cost curve down by forcing middle class individuals to pay more out of pocket for services. Its basically saying,"Hey I know how we fix the budget gap lets just squeeze more out of the middle class to discourage them for using their coverage unless they absolutely need it." That's one hell of a liberal idea there. You know what would have done far more for less political hurt? Tax wealthly individuals an additional 3-5% believe it or not that's a popular idea across political spectrum. Democrats decide to squeeze the middle class instead. These types of moves are the problem. The supposed governing from the left is not left enough. I'm not saying they need to be all peace and love blah blah. However their overall record needs to resemble that of a progressive or center left agenda. Right now there literally is not much to distinguish Obama from Bush. He's nicer but continues most of the same policies. I respect slow progressive change but it cannot be accomplished in our current political climate. The right controls the narrative so unless you can provide results that are obvious and widespread you will be unable to take it back. No center left government will ever provide those types of results.

The basic premise of your argument is that independents believe garbage and will not vote for any left leaning candidates. I disagree Dennis Kusinich probably cannot win the presidency because he's sort of ostracized by his own party. If they stood with him and pounded on a simple message one just as simple as Obama's change mantra they could seriously win. Basically the democrats would have to switch electoral strategies. Take the narrative back. Here is a sample of the types of things they should be saying.

America our union strong, our future is bright, however we are at a point where a choice must be made. Do we want to build a future were our markets are stable, have well defined rules and regulations? A nation where a person who is willing to work can still provide their children with a good standard of living and good educational options. A country were our industries are sustainable and work for the benefit of themselves without operating in a predatory or parasitic nature with citizens. A nation with the worlds most and modern and impressive public school system. A nation with the world's more modernized public infrastructure that both well planned and maintained. If you want a future that is clean, meaningful and bright then come with us. We have a vision. A vision of an America that is stronger, cleaner, with a bright future and a continued role in the world. Help us make this vision reality. America is a nation unlike any other but we must ensure that our resources are allocated properly to build a better even stronger america.

That's just a sample of what I would like democrats to do. They need to claim one vision that they can pay expensive speech writers to articulate. Get behind that message and pound it home over and over and over. This would go a long way towards counteracting the constant barrage of bullshit by the right. Back to my other points I'm not saying let republicans win but lets just be honest democrats do not have any progressive wins on their record in a very long time. In fact we have democratic presidents signing executive orders to limit and in some way prohibit abortions under the new healthcare law. Its not about being a pure liberal because America is not ready for that. I understand that however we do need to start getting things done one by one. Term by term bill by bill. The current administration has not done anything remotely resembling what a left leaning president would do.

Arrrgh! I was about to post my audio reply to Joe. Now I will have to add yours. BTW, I wasn't describing you. There are Liberals who I deal with who are foaming at the mouth, forever upset with every liberal. They hate republicans but spend 99% of their time bashing Democrats and especially Obama and Pelosi and Reid. You can barely distinguish them from Republicans. I'm talking about the people who are not helping.

There is a lot to reply to here, but it's nearly 4 AM. I'll hit you back in less than 122 days this time.
